Opera in the SF (Ball)Park: A Purely Social East Bay Cohousing Free Field Trip

AT&T Park (map)

Selected By: Raines Cohen

Cohousers, Community Seekers, co-op members: It's time for something different, a purely social outing that just happens to be free... and cultural! Classic... yet modern, like recreating an old-fashioned neighborhood or connecting with your neighbors in a village. A mashup between Europe and America, just like cohousing. It'll be green, just like cohousing, because we'll be in the outfield (or perhaps closer to home plate).

Yes, it's time for a trip to San Francisco to go to the Giants' ballpark downtown (convenient to Muni and Caltrain, or a short walk from BART or Ferry) to see Puccini's Tosca, performed by San Francisco Opera, simulcast live on the big screen.

Note that RSVPing here is not enough, to be sure of getting in early, click here to print out an early-admission ticket (you have to give your info to SF Opera, but you can tell them not to email you). And please observe the restrictions, don't get your cooler or bottles confiscated.

I just got a card in the mail, and am interested in going.. care to join me and some East Bay Cohousing friends? Here's what a friend had to say about it:

I wanted to give ya'll a heads up that the free opera simulcast in PacBell park is coming up on Friday, June 5th!

A bunch of us went last year (and/or ran into each other there) and it was a lovely evening, perfect weather, wine, great opera, and FREE! Ok, the entry process was a bit of a goat rodeo, but apparently they
are opening all the gates for pre-registered entrance this year. I can't promise about the weather..
and I can only promise that the opera singers can sing better than I can, and it's likely to be a fantastic show.

Tosca, by Giacomo Puccini

'An idealistic artist, a celebrated singer and a corrupt police chief engage in a fierce battle of wills in this tempestuous tale of cruelty and deception. With its themes of political intrigue, sexual intimidation and official hypocrisy, Puccini’s great melodrama set in 1800 is anything but dated. Canadian soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, praised by The New York Times for her "lushly beautiful sound and poignant vulnerability," makes her Company debut in the title role.

Baritone Lado Ataneli (Scarpia) has been praised by the Los Angeles Times as possessing "one of the healthiest, roundest, most mellifluous voices on the planet." Honey-voiced Italian tenor Roberto Aronica makes up the third side of this fatal love triangle.'

If you all would like to join me, go pre-register yourselves. I'm willing to go early and get in line and
save spots, but you should print your own registration thingy to be sure of getting in:

The gates open at 6:30 for pre-registered entrance. Last year people were lined up around the block way before then, but there was still PLENTY of room on the lawn and in the seats. You can bring snacks and a spread for the lawn, there are some limitations to what can come in, but it was pretty casual last year.

Also, if you do come and intend to sit on the lawn, bring some plastic trash bags or something waterproof to put under your blanket. The lawn was a little damp last year.
