Here is a mind- and soul-enriching day of exploring innovative, affordable and sustainable urban cohousing models.
See Berkeley Cohousing’s turn-of-the-century-farmhouse common house, a bay-friendly drought-tolerant garden, and the central green created by moving parking to the periphery. Learn how thrice-weekly common meals help keep people connected. Marvel at the mutual support and ongoing education that helps this community minimize waste. Explore how Aging In Community connects 8-month-olds and 80-year-olds, living together in harmony.
From there, we’ll hop a bus to Emeryville’s Triple Point Cohousing, and wander our way on foot across Oakland’s Temescal neighborhood, stopping off at Mariposa Grove to eat lunch and through Temescal Creek Cohousing to discover how other cohousing neighborhoods in the vicinity were able to retrofit existing infill sites and create the opportunity for community. See the solar-powered common house that paid for itself, urban chickens, bees, café connections, naysaying neighbors converted to new allies, and Permaculture applications galore.
We'll end up at a nearby new "instant cohousing" site in the process of transformation from apartment building to community.
Is community really "The Secret Ingredient in Sustainability?" You be the judge.
It’s a delightful tour of Oakland/Berkeley/Emeryville cohousing neighborhoods that will invigorate you with some easy flat walking between sites (total distance of just a few miles). Muse on the day during the bus ride back to our starting spot.

Payments you make go to the organizer, not to Meetup. You must make refund requests to the organizer.
Shelley, the tour will run 10 AM - 4 PM (approximately). Talk with Ellen at Daily Acts, I think your son would be welcome, but we should make sure that we're providing an environment you're comfortable with for him.
