Senior Cohousing 2nd edition slide show with author/architect Chuck Durrett

Charles Durrett will hold a presentation and book signing for his latest book, The Senior Cohousing Handbook: A Community Approach to Independent Living, a comprehensive guide to creating and living in cohousing. It outlines how anyone 50+ can custom-build their neighborhood to fit their needs and aspirations. This is housing organized by the residents, not for them, with an emphasis on independence and autonomy. The event will include a slide show to illustrate senior cohousing and a presentation that will be the perfect chance to find out more about living in a more supportive living environment.

The fastest growing segment of the housing industry is 50+ with over 10,000 Americans turning 50 every single day. This growing population of baby boomers seeks solutions that have more to do with continuing a vibrant, active life than settling in for the duration.

Charles Durrett’s new book, The Senior Cohousing Handbook is a comprehensive Senior Cohousing guide to joining or creating a cohousing community. A leading cohousing architect, he has won numerous awards, including the United Nations World Habitat Award and the Best of 50+ Housing Award (National Home Builders Assoc. 2008). Durrett is credited with coining the term ‘cohousing’ and together with wife and professional partner, Kathryn McCamant, introduced cohousing projects to America.

Roni, 4th Street in West Berkeley is a long walk from North Berkeley BART. But there are several buses that go there from various stations: plug the address into http://transit.511.org/ for directions. It is very close to the Amtrak station, so you could take the train from Richmond BART or the Amtrak bus from SF to Emeryville and the train from there. If you join us at the Sierra Club potluck beforehand, it is not a bad walk, bike ride, or bus+walk.

I have previously attended slide show by Chuck and always find him to be witty, entertaining and convincing. As you know I am as strong of a believer in community living as anyone. Because I have attended other meeting I look for new information and I think that was lacking. Of course I also read his book and the meeting was for people less informed than I am. I support Chuck and Katie 110%. They have built meaningful communities and made live better for others. The true success of the meeting will be determining by the amount of interest generated and more by the building of communities.

Chuck is a wonderful source of inspiration and suggestions for designing and forming a co housing group. It would be very wise to listen to his suggestions carefully.
