El Sobrante Potential Community Sites tour w/green architect&developer

No location was chosen

We've had a lot of interest from some EBCOHO members in finding sites that are larger, greener, and more affordable than anything on the market in the Berkeley-Oakland area, so we're delighted to be able to offer a field trip to explore a place with some options that meet those needs, with a couple professionals who can help us understand the potential for community there.

It turns out that if you go just a little bit beyond the edge of town, you can find places where there's still trees and forest, quiet hiking space with trees away from busy roads, where the real estate bubble has popped, and where land costs are measured by the acre rather than the square foot. Where you can still feel the cool Bay Breezes, and transit connections in all directions are within reach -- with easy access to Marin, the North Bay, and the Central Valley and Delta.

Join us this Saturday morning for an EBCOHO exclusive mini-carpool-tour of potential cohousing sites in El Sobrante with a green developer and architect of the El Sobrante Waldorf school, Greg Van Mechelen. They've identified a couple of sites that might work well for multi-generational and senior cohousing neighborhoods.

The mini-tour will run about 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM, and costs just $30 per adult ($20 for current EBCOHO supporting members - upgrade today for the discount), less than a third of what it costs to go on the regular cohousing bus tours of existing sites.

Be one of the pioneers and have the most input into what could be the first new-build cohousing neighborhood in the East Bay in a decade. Meet other cohousers who share your vision, and get help making it real. Learn how the numbers could work for these sites, and visualize finding your new neighbors to join you in designing your new home in community.

Advance purchase required - only a few spots are available for this personalized onsite learning experience. Exact meeting location and directions provided upon payment.

For folks interested in carpooling, please arrive out in front of Berkeley Cohousing by 9 AM at the latest.
Note: these are raw sites without direct road/driveway access - wear good shoes, and be prepared for a little hiking/climbing/scrambling in the mud, so dress appropriately. Tour will take place rain or shine. BYO water bottle/drinks and any snacks you need - some folks may go out to lunch afterwards, if there's interest.

Please let us know if you have trouble with the PayPal mechanism after RSVPing - you do not need a PayPal account, just click the "continue without creating account" option at the bottom of the payment screen to enter credit card info directly. Supporting members, you can adjust the payment amount to reflect your discount.

If you're interested in the El Sobrante area but can't make it this Saturday, please do RSVP "No" so we can register your interest via the survey questions on the second page.

Hi. I was out of town and the system will not allow me to reply NO to a past event. Can I register my interest in el sobrante group by adding this comment? ~ A. Osenga

We saw two excellent potential cohousing sites. We had all of our questions answered during the site visits and then at a meeting after the visits. The architect and the developer along with Betsy and Raines helped us understand the differences in types/size of cohousng that could work at each site - eg number of units at each site and how the number of units would affect the cost per unit. We had time to talk about the process of getting community approvals, etc. We also talked about how to make intergenerational cohousing work with features that would work for both families with children and seniors.
