Dwight Way Buyers' Potential Partnership Get-together & matchmaking (Berkeley)

This location is shown only to members

We've had a couple dozen EBCOHO members visit the 17-bedroom Dwight Way mansion in the past week, and more who couldn't make the open houses so far but who have expressed strong interest. One of our supporting members has hosted some tours and helped educate people about community potential there. Another supporting member, who found the site through her own research and ran into us there, is getting ready to make an offer but feels that, given the size of the house and the work it will need, teaming up with others for the purchase would be the best. We have had other members expressing strong interest in joining together on community in this house -- but not necessarily with compatible visions, or all the resources on tap to make a viable offer.

As we mentioned in last week's EBCOHO bulletin, we'd like to host a gathering this Sunday the 28th, here at Berkeley Cohousing, for people who are serious about making an offer, to compare notes and visions, look for points of compatability, and see if they might be able to go in together.

We will facilitate introductions and sharing, and help people identify next steps. EBCOHO is not a lender, investor, or partner here (although we admit we were tempted by this place), but we are here to advise, coach, connect, and be a match-maker where that is welcome. Based on who shows up, we'll engage in a combination of education and simulation, games and discussion, modeling and speculating to help people figure out their role in a group making an offer on the property.

If you just want to rent a room there and not participate in the investment/group development, sharing in the risk and opportunity, then this is probably not the meeting for you. We are asking $30 per household ($20 for our supporting members) upon arrival -- you define household however you like, but we are looking for principals/supporters to be in the room.

Because people will be discussing real estate negotiations on a property currently offered on the open market, and individuals' financial situations, we ask that you participants keep the contents this session confidential, so as not to compromise a bidding advantage or deter acceptance of an offer -- and to allow for full, free expression in the room.

Light refreshments provided. Kids' play area available, but you need to provide your own supervision.

Reminder: this is not at the Dwight Way house site, and there is no open house there. Please don't disturb the tenants.

Note: this is not a tour of Berkeley Cohousing. Please don't disturb our neighbors, take pictures, peer into windows, smoke onsite, or park in the lot; my neighbors will be cooking common dinner in the kitchen, so please use the guestroom for restroom access so we don't interrupt them. No pets or service animals in the Common House - we have a member with severe allergies. Disability limitation notice: climbing several steps is required for access.

I thought that having Jen so prepared for a bid makes it natural for her to go forward on her own. On the other hand it was good that Betsy was able to communicate some other aspects of how to go about this project. I am interested to hear what the outcome will be.
