Community Living Abroad and Afar, Cheap and Warm:Potluck/Conversation (Berkeley)

This location is shown only to members

Interested in building community, but frozen out by the Northern California/Bay Area housing market?

Join Hub Bay Area Founding Member/Cohousing Coaches Raines Cohen and Betsy Morris and experienced international resident Linder Allen (former boardmember of the Association of Americans Resident Overseas (AARO)) for a conversation about community and the many ways to find and co-create it in various warm, stable, and affordable places, from Hawaii to France and Egypt (Linder has lived in both) and beyond, for retirement or just simple living. Together with you, we'll outline opportunities and obstacles, debunk myths and solve mysteries, and see who's interested in further exploration, socials, or learning together.

We'll also share some info on more-affordable community living opportunities in the farther reaches of Northern California, as well as ownership models (including fractional ownership) that can further reduce costs and add flexibility to your life.

This is a continuation of the brainstorming conversation held in early June in San Francisco, but new participants are most welcome.

$10 per person for space rental/meeting fees ($5 for EBCOHO supporting members. join today and save!). Please clearly label any non-obvious ingredients in your dish (if you know, include what you're bringing in your RSVP response so others can plan to bring something complementary), especially meat and allergens (like wheat, nuts, and the like). We'll supply plates, cloth napkins, cups, water, and silverware.

The meeting will be held in the Berkeley Cohousing common house. Note: this is not a tour; please do not disturb our neighbors or wander around. An infant will be going to bed early in the building, so we will request that voices be kept down and that we step lightly. This is a private residence, with a few steps up required to enter; because one of our neighbors has a strong allergy, no pets or service animals are allowed. Please park onstreet, bike, or use public transit (North Berkeley BART is a few blocks away, and the 88 bus stops out front).

Wow, we've got a full house tonight. Please remember to park onstreet and minimize our impacts on my neighbors, especially at the end when a small child will be sleeping upstairs -- no outdoor conversations or clanking dishes after 8:30 PM. I just confirmed a surprise out-of-town guest: Bob Bruegel of Nyland Cohousing (Lafayette, CO), developer of Olabrisa, a green community in Mexico being created by cohousing folks: http://www.olabrisa.com/

Great talk! I like the idea of community in the Virgin Islands or maybe Hawaii. I would like to continue a discussion about a worker owned business and intentional community, like Breitenbush's Hot Springs resort. Any people interested in discussing it? Let's keep in contact.

Your star rating system doesn't work. The meeting was fun and very INFORMATIVE. Betsy and Raines were amazingly knowledgeable and I look forward to learning more.
