East Bay Cohousing Intro & Welcome w/ Orientation & Sharing Circle

Long Haul (map)

Selected By: Raines Cohen

Welcome to East Bay Cohousing (EBCOHO)! We've got a lot of new members joining our group recently, and some long-time cohousing seekers who are recently getting more active in their quest for community, and some new cohousers in existing cohousing neighborhoods in the Berkeley-Oakland-Emeryville area, so it's past time for a get-together and refresher.
Join us Saturday morning for an EBCOHO Introduction and Sharing Circle at the Long Haul in South Berkeley (near Ashby BART) where we will:

  • Learn about what cohousing is and how the movement is growing
  • Map out established communities are located in the area, and hear from some cohousers about community living: how it can help with independent living, raising kids, living greener, and Aging in Community.
  • Get to know the differences and similarities between cohousing, co-ops, condos, group houses, and other forms of intentional community. Find out what an EcoVillage is, and the difference between retrofit and new-build models in how they get organized and financed.
  • Find out where there are current and coming-soon openings for rent, sale, or co-ownership, both market-rate and affordable, intergenerational and age-specific.
  • See slides and/or video clips of community living and development
  • Get a sneak preview of upcoming workshops and trainings, and sign up at discounted rates.
  • Take a guided tour of the East Bay Cohousing website, so you can find what you need and discover how to adjust settings so you get only the emails you want.
  • Learn about the benefits of becoming a supporting member
  • Share our interests and opportunities, and see where there are matches.

The first hour an a half will cover the basics, so people already familiar with the different types of community living options and communities in the area and the EBCOHO site should arrive by 10:30 for the interactive sharing circle.

The event will run about 9 AM 'til noon, with an optional no-host lunch to follow; order at Cafe Valparaiso across the street or bring your own. The door will be locked once we get started; please arrive promptly so we don't have to interrupt to let you in.

The Long Haul is wheelchair accessible, including the restroom, but it does have a lot of old books on the walls in case you're sensitive to such things. BYO coffee or pick up a cup at the Nomad cafe 2 blocks South if you're

Ashby BART is just 2 blocks away; AC transit has bus stops right out front from Oakland and Berkeley. There should be parking available on-street (although a neighbor warns: don't leave anything out in the car if you don't want it broken into).

EBCOHO co-organizers/Cohousing Coaches Betsy and Raines will co-host.
