Introduction

Hi. I am a 64-year-old woman living in Alamo, and I want to move from my house to something smaller, with a neighborhood feel, but without all the responsibility on me for everything. I have an aging chocolate lab, and a smart-ass 20-lb cat.

How did you hear about East Bay Cohousing?

I have been looking into cohousing for a while. I first read about in in connection with Davis.

What does Cohousing mean to you?

It means having my own home, but sharing things--equipment or tools, baby-sitting or pet-sitting, sharing some meals, looking after each other to make sure everyone is ok. Socializing when I want to and being able to be alone when I want.

What's most likely: Rent, Buy, Share, Build, Co-create?

Buy, build or co-create.

Where are you most interested in living?

Alameda, Oakland, toward the Jack London direction, North Oakland. I have a lot of friends in Alameda, so although there are no groups there, I would like to have good access to Alameda.

  • Joan, we apologize for the language you found offensive on the Emeryville event post. It was a glib self-mocking summary of a real survey of cohousers nationwide - overall we do have a very large percentage of graduate degrees and have over 90% voting rates, so it is an accurate characterization in that sense of typical cohousers.

Since you mention your Alameda/JLS interest, have you checked out the Eastlake Cohousing site near Lake Merritt, plus the potential Alameda senior cohousing site?

  • Welcome to East Bay Cohousing, Joan. There actually is a forming group in Alameda; keep an eye on your email and our calendar for an upcoming "study group" workshop series there. You may also find useful links in the Aging In Community MeetUp, linked at http://www.AgingInCommunity.com/
