I am a 60-year-old recent law school graduate and a grandmother of four. I grew up in LA but left my heart in San Francisco. I am a polymath. I write political and economic analysis and articles from the left for public consumption. I build houses.
Friends who live in cohousing told me about your organization after I expressed my strong interest in the cohousing movement. I found your website via Internet search.
At heart, cohousing would provide a stable home in a stable community. Building from that nucleus, this stable community would be composed of empathetic people who knew the value of both private and community space. I have met tens of thousands of people in my lifetime. The quality that the most respected share is empathy. We would reach major decisions by the Consensus Method, which empowers all participants. Our shared spaces would be proudly kept. We would be establish various art and craft shops, ranging from oil portraiture to metal shop with a real oxyacetylene torch.
I see value in all means of creating cohousing. I often fantasize about the least capital-intensive means: renting a space in an apartment building with lots of vacant units for my friends. I am a former mortgage lender and real estate broker so I am familiar with many means of creating ownership. (no, it wasn't me. There were still loan underwriters employed by mortgage lenders when I was in the business.) Finally, I have designed and built two of my own homes. With this experience, I would hope to be able to facilitate the creation of many cohousing groups.
I seek space in any of the following communities, listed by preference. Albany Berkeley/North Berkeley Telegraph/Temescal/Rockridge El Cerrito near EC BART Convenient public transportation is a must.
This is an important group and an important concept for the wellbeing of humans and other critters.
