I've had a life-long desire to live cooperatively. Into exploring different (less-expensive) ways to do that, and also maintain privacy (imo, a major advantage to cohousing).
I've been involved so long (well before 2005) that I don't remember.
A built-in community, and living more lightly on the earth.
Desires and means have changed a lot. I no longer can afford to own. And I no longer have the time or patience to spend years creating 'the perfect community' before move-in.
It has to be an urban (not suburban) walkable neighborhood less than a mile from BART, where I'm not car-dependent. I've been spoiled by living in North Oakland for many years, nearly equidistant from downtown Oakland and downtown Berkeley, not far from MacArthur BART.
"I was a founding member of -- and am now an investor in -- North Oakland (now Eastlake) Cohousing. "
East Bay Cohousing can serve as an excellent resource for providing opportunities for people to meet each other, to attend workshops, for brainstorming, and for helping to nurture core groups that will create their own communities. Joan other address: jlichterman@mindspring.com

Joan - I can pick you up for Saturday; phone is best: [masked],
Best,
veta
it was so great to meet you !!! thank you for founding the group and all your work to make it successful!
Welcome Joan, I am pretty sure that Caltrains allows your bike, but they may balk if you cannot lift it onto the train. They seem hesitant to help lift bicycles. AMTRAK is more likely to help, but the clarity of thinking is not there yet. As long as you can manage the bicycle there should be no problem. It is the same on the ferrys.
hi Joan, I just came across this group today and I'm interested in meeting with like-minded folk.
I have a two sites in West Berkeley, one of which I've already drawn up and presented to the city for three work/live units.
On the adjacent site (a corner site) I plan to build a commercial kitchen for exclusively gluten-free prepared food, with a cafe outlet, and one more unit. I live on a third adjacent lot. I have long been interested in intentional community.
