The Keys to Green Affordable Housing:
A Guide for Existing Multifamily PropertiesRetrofitting our existing housing stock is key to reaching our
economic,
environmental and
carbon reduction goals. This session will discuss effective approaches and key considerations to successful and affordable
green multifamily retrofit projects. We will identify strategies that make measurable impacts on green multifamily retrofits and explore
incentives and finance opportunities available for green multifamily retrofits.
This is the first of three 90 minute national webinars, sponsored by the United States
Green Building Council (
USGBC), which will discuss key issues in the affordable housing sector, including:
green multifamily retrofit projects, sustainable operations and maintenance of affordable housing buildings, and financial and incentive aspects of affordable projects.
We are hosting this session at the Hub in the Brower Center in downtown Berkeley because we believe the topics are extremely relevant for cohousing, especially "retrofit" cohousing projects using existing multifamily housing, as North Oakland Cohousing is currently envisioning. The combination of outside financing specifically linked to green development could be the key that helps make cohousing affordable in the urban East Bay.
After all three sessions of this training, you will be able to, according to USGBC:
- Apply an effective approach and key considerations to successful and affordable green multifamily retrofit projects.
- Identify cost effective strategies that make measurable impacts on green multifamily retrofits.
- Explore incentives and finance opportunities available for green multifamily retrofits.
- Identify key sustainable facility management strategies that improve building efficiency and create healthier housing while ensuring long term durability and keeping cost down for building owner.
- Employ effective resident education and foster changes in resident behavior.
- Evaluate the costs and benefits of building green affordable housing.
- Successfully track the benefits and savings of green practices.
- Analyze and utilize collected data to benefit future decision making.
- Identify available tools to aid in data collection and analysis.
The overall series has three sessions:
- Affordable Green Multifamily Retrofits - April 1, 2010
- Session 2: Green Operations and Maintenance Strategies for Affordable Housing - April 15, 2010
- Session 3: Data Collection and Analysis of Green Affordable Housing - May 13, 2010
We will be hosting only the first session, but we will supply participants with info on how to join in the later sessions online, and/or helping them self-organize additional viewing sessions.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs) available for AIA members by advance request.
The broadcast starts promptly at 10 AM and runs for 90 minutes; we may do some discussion afterwards.
You can pay at the door: $10 per household (
or bring a friend) or organization; half-price for current EBCOHO supporting members.
Local hosting brought to you by your Cohousing Coaches, as members of USGBC and The Hub.
