Established Cohousing Neighborhoods

Here's the established cohousing neighborhoods in our region, where there are occasional openings for rent and for sale:

  • NEW! Golden Gate Cohousing will have a unit for rent, available March 1, 2012, for the first time since the all-rental permanently-affordable community was initially occupied in August.
  • Berkeley Cohousing (aka Sacramento Street Cohousing or Strawberry Creek Commons) A rare room was now (March, 2011) available for rental in a Berkeley Cohousing home. click here for historical details. While there are rarely sales or rentals at Berkeley cohousing (the last unit resale was seven years ago, and half the founders are still there after seventeen years), a home nextdoor sold to an EBCOHO member two years ago, and both the current and prior owners participated in the community as associate members, with the fence removed, for the last 15 years.
  • Doyle Street Cohousing (Emeryville)
  • Swan's Market Cohousing (Old Oakland) This cohousing neighborhood, the most urban in the U.S., is part of a mixed-use community in Old Oakland.
  • Mariposa Grove (N. Oakland) - Home across street was for sale; open houses were held in July, 2011 (Free EBCOHO member login required)
  • Temescal Commons (Oakland)
  • Temescal Creek Cohousing (Oakland) There was a One and a half month sublet in December 2010 that let someone to "try before they buy" into cohousing (Free EBCOHO member login required)
  • Triple Point Cohousing (Emeryville/Oakland/Berkeley border) now has one home rented and eventually for sale.
  • Hidden Creek Cohousing (formerly Fruitvale Mini-Cohousing, East Oakland)
  • Pleasant Hill Cohousing (about a mile from BART along a bike trail, where there was recently a rental available (now filled) ) and regular monthly open houses.

When we hear of an opening in area communities, we often send notice first to our supporting members. Upgrade Your Membership to get this advance heads-up on rare opportunities in the area, plus a cohousing book, Cohousing Coaching, and discounts on events.
