Forming Groups

Forming groups in the area we currently know of are:

  • EBCOHO Supporting Group Member North Oakland Cohousing is now sometimes known as Eastlake Cohousing and is seeking members again after a year of working intensively on a site at Claremont and Telegraph that turned out not to meet their needs (and a couple years to unwind from that plan). The group is aiming to acquire an occupied apartment building near Oakland's Lake Merritt and move in gradually over time. Keep an eye on our calendar for some of their orientations and socials.
  • EBCOHO Supporting Members Amos and Annie have a vision for a micro-cohousing community in North Oakland, and are seeking people to join them in the quest. Learn more here.
  • EBCOHO supporting member Spring Friedlander (involved in this group for over a decade!) is looking (as of 2011) for people to buy or rent homes adjacent to her group home, Prudence Crandall house, in North Oakland near Telegraph Avenue.
  • The MacArthur Transit Village project is finally getting underway, after decades of planning, and we've had a bunch of EBCOHO members, including Spring, express interest in getting cohousing integrated into the plans there.
  • EBCOHO member Aurora Levin Morales has been looking for allies to join her in creating Springwater Chemically Accessible Eco-Village (named for Berkeley City Council member Dona Spring). Her vision is of a trailer park full of "tiny homes" that can provide mobile homeownership for people who find conventional housing stock physically challenging to live in -- and add the option of easy relocation should environmental factors make a particular location unlivable. join the conversation on our message boards.
  • EBCOHO member Kelly Simpson is organizing a mini-cohousing retrofit San Francisco Backyard Neighborhood and Learning Center with three very active member families who have met with a real-estate agent and a mortgage broker and are preparing to meet with a lawyer. They are hoping to buy a 4-unit building within the next several months, so they are searching for another like-minded family with the same home-buying time frame.
  • Bay Area Community Land Trust (BACLT) is centered around Berkeley but also looking at potential sites in nearby cities, this group is working on changing city law to encourage affordable limited-equity housing cooperatives, especially to support members of existing coops who are "Aging In Community. Co-sponsored a bus tour with us visiting cohousing and senior housing coops in Davis in 2009. Learn more about Community Land Trusts in this YES! Magazine Article.
  • Local green builder and EBCOHO member Dan Antonioli is looking for members to join 611 EcoVillage, the small urban community he's created in the Temescal/Uptown neighborhoods, just off of MLK on 32d Street. He is transitioning from a rental model and seeking members ready and willing to become investors and co-owners of the community. There's also a studio available for rent as of January, 2012.
There's a separate MeetUp for Silicon Valley Cohousing, and some searching groups. We're part of Cohousing California, and we support the national nonprofit cohousing Association of the United States (Coho/US).

There are also several smaller "core groups" of friends who have been talking for various lengths of time about creating community together. While we can't list these publicly, we can make introductions, where appropriate - that's one of the things we do with our paid supporting members.

We are also increasingly approached by developers and local real estate professionals with potential sites. The more you fill out your member profile here, the better we can match you with these opportunities. If you know of an opportunity, please contact us!
