Mariposa Grove

Mariposa Grove is a retrofit cohousing neighborhood focused on creativity & social change in North Oakland. It links four adjacent buildings on 59th and 60th streets (near MLK) - three containing condos, and one multi-family house with Associate Members. NEW 7/10/2010: Across the street home for sale (free EBCOHO login required) that could become an associate member of the community.

Mariposa Grove has shared space for many meals, creative pursuits and collaborations, office space, workshop, gardens, etc. The community spirit has a strong element of D-I-Y: Folks get together and do things themselves, contribute work to keep dues affordable, and work with what there is.

All of the core Mariposa Grove homes are permanently affordable, limited-equity condominiums on land owned by the Northern California Land Trust (NCLT).

Mariposa Grove's Mission

Mariposa grove is a member-owned, consensus-based intentional community in an urban setting that supports sustainability, social justice activism, creativity and the arts. We are creating a permanently affordable home, a physical and social space where we share resources and responsibilities, grow together and support each other to fulfill our personal dreams while providing a model for the larger community of which we are a part.

From the MG website: Among the folks here (both in the affordable condos and in the house next door) we include 6 couples, 4 single adults, 5 children under 6, a 13 yr old and 2 college students. We love to cook for each other, make music together, meet each other's friends, and build this community together.

More pictures and info can be found at the Mariposa Grove website.
There are no openings at this time (and there have been none since the initial purchases took place in 2008) but a potential future Associate Member's across-the-street house is for sale: details (free EBCOHO login required)
