Part of National Cohousing Month (organized by the National Cohousing Association)
and Affordable Housing Month in the East Bay (organized by East Bay Housing Organizations)
Come see what it looks like to live in cohousing neighborhoods in the East Bay:
- Visit sustainable intentional communities in the Berkeley-Oakland area.
- See how they blend privacy and community, with individual homes plus a Common House.
- Get a taste of what it's like to dine together, with regular common meals.
- Learn about each community's unique design, how it came together, and the innovative approaches to affordability, diversity, inclusion, and sustainability each embodies.
- Find out how to learn about future openings in these communities and new ones in formation in the area and beyond.
Free and open to all; individual communities may have refreshments for sale or other opportunities to support them or their members work.
Led by East Bay Cohousing, the regional umbrella network for cooperative community living, in partnership with EBHO, Cohousing California, the National Cohousing Alliance (Coho/US), the Bay Area Cooperative Housing Network, Bay Area Community Land Trust (BACLT), Northern California Land Trust (NCLT) and more.
BYO transportation. For those who RSVP, we will share carpool, bike pool, and transit info.
Stay tuned for open hours for each stop - we will be sending different people to different locations at different times so we don't overwhelm any one of them, we've had so much interest in the crawl.
Participating communities include:
- Parker Street Co-op: Longtime Limited-equity affordable housing on the UC Berkeley South Side of Campus. No openings at the moment, but having a relationship could help you if and when opportunities come up. This will be the first site open to all.
- Pleasant Hill Cohousing: The first "Greenfield" new build cohousing in the East Bay, and the most suburban. Several homes for sale.
- Doyle Street Cohousing: The first community in the Bay Area, in Emeryville.
- Mariposa Grove: A permanently-affordable Community Land Trust-owned creative cohousing neighborhood in North Oakland.
- Berkeley Cohousing: A West Berkeley neighborhood living well together for over three decades, and now growing through connection to adjacent renters. NEW: Open to all at 11 AM, or buy a bagel brunch ticket or become a supporting member ($10/month) and come at 10 AM.
- Gooseberry: A West Berkeley mini-cohousing neighborhood, with a current opening.
- Tiny Spirit Richmond: A tiny home village serving homeless youth.
- 7 on 7: A West Berkeley compound for sale, either as individual homes or collectively.
- Bella Vista Commons: A Lake Merritt-area Oakland small community looking for one more co-owner.
And the list is still growing. Plus we may have founder from another community, Kingfisher Cohousing, sharing a few words at Berkeley Cohousing.
