Replacing I-980: Cohousing for Community
What should we do with the land under I-980? Could "cohousing" make sense as an equitable and practical option? Consider amongst community.
Oaklandside reports that Caltrans is considering removing I-980. Residents old and new have many ideas for how to use that space. This conversation requires nuance and must keep an eye towards the history of the relations between humans and the land, and how life there may be good and promote flourishing into the future.
One option is known as "cohousing." This communal style of living arrived in the US in the late 20th-century and has spread to many part of the country. In fact, there are already cohousing communities in Oakland.
Leading cohousing architect Charles Durrett of The Cohousing Company will talk about his recent book, A Solution to Homelessness in Your Town. A detailed case study of a new cohousing community in Napa County, Valley View Senior Housing, he will share lessons learned, how a project in an urban environment should adapt, and the history of the cohousing movement generally. Finally we will place this into the context of Oakland's past and the political concerns of people today and to come.
